Make Perfect Pinwheels Every Time!

In this tutorial, I’ve illustrated instructions for making four Half Square Triangles (HST) needed for a pinwheel block. I also included the formula for creating any size pinwheel block you need.

I love the pinwheel block. It’s a timeless classic that can easily be incorporated into traditional as well as modern style quilt designs, but piecing all those little triangles would be a pain. With new rotary cutting techniques, however, making quilt blocks has become quick and easy. The pinwheel block is no exception.

Now grab your calculator. This is the formula for making any pinwheel size you want.

[NOTE: The finished size DOES NOT include 1/4 inch seam allowance.]
  1. Determine the finished block size you need, e.g. 4 inches.
  2. Divide the finished block size by 1.41 (4 ÷ 1.41 = 2.82).
  3. Add that result to 0.875 (2.82 + 0.875 = 3.70 ).
  4. Now round up this result to the nearest ⅛ inch to get your parent size block, which in this example would be 3.75 or 3¾ inch. So, to make one 4" x 4" pinwheel, you need two 3¾ inch squares.

Wonky Beach House Mug Rug Pattern

Wow! Mug rugs are just flying out of my studio these days. I have them all over the house and my husband is still not sure what the heck they are, ha! I love Wonky Beach House mug rug and the striped "ticking" fabric gives it a very casual "beachy" feel.

    Purple Coneflower Mug Rug

I think this is one of my prettiest mug rugs so far. The inspiration for this piece came from a photo I took of the Purple Coneflowers in our garden a few years ago. Purple is one of my favourite colours, so I really enjoyed designing and making this one.

I designed this table runner, Urban Pathway, for our new coffee table and finished it this weekend. The fabric, Modern Deco by Jane Spoler, has a sleek and modern art deco theme.

I love the Art Deco period, so I immediately fell in love with this fabric and kept the block design simple to showcase it. What is Art Deco? Think of The Great Gatsby, the Empire State Building in New York, and the Roaring 20s.
